The technology that powers our photochromic lenses

Neochromes react to changing light conditions on a molecular level to lighten and darken according to changing light conditions.

How it works?

The photochromic molecules in our lenses dynamically change shape based on UV light exposure. When exposed to UV light, the molecules enter a closed-shape state, which causes the lenses to remain clear. When UV light is removed, the molecules morph into an open state to absorb the light. The lenses thus change as the molecules darken substantially under UV rays and remain clear when UV rays are absent.

When the lens is first exposed to UV light, the photochromic molecules begin to change from clear to dark.

Lenses are at peak activation. Light transmission, activated color, and color uniformity can be assessed at this state.

Fast fade-back is critical. It begins when UV light no longer falls on the lens. The shorter the fade-back, the more comfortable and functional the lens is to the wearer.

  • In warmer climates, expect our photochromic lenses to darken less but clear quickly.  
  • In cooler climates, the lenses darken more and clear more slowly.

Neochromes lenses are available worldwide as semi-finished blanks in Plastic 1.50 and Hi-index 1.60 and 1.67. Neochromes Dark is available in plastic and hi-index 1.67. Neochromes is also now available with Camber Technology in Polycarbonate (hard coat) and Hi-Index 1.60 and 1.67 (uncoated).

US, Canada, and LATAM

In the US, Canada, and LATAM, Neochromes is offered in Plastic 1.50, Trivex, Polycarbonate, Hi-index 1.60 and 1.67, and FT-28 (bifocal) Polycarbonate. Neochromes Dark is available in Plastic, Polycarbonate, and Hi-index 1.67. Neochromes is also now available with Camber Technology in Polycarbonate (hard coat) and Hi-Index 1.60 and 1.67 (uncoated).
